I found this article in an issue of Manila bulletin dated June 28, 2008. It was titled “Escuela Taller”(es-kwe-la tal-yer). The article was a about a school that teaches trades in the construction industry. I got interested with the Escuella Taller and read more about it. It was also featured in the November 2010 issue of the BluPrint magazine. Different from an ordinary engineering school, Escuela Taller aims to “equip the underprivileged youth with knowledge and specialized skills to help them uplift their economic status while focusing on the preservation of heritage structures.”

It was established through a grant from the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional Para el Desarrollo (AECID) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, with its partners: the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Intramuros Administration (IA). It is now located at Revellin de Recoletos in Intramuros, Manila.

The students here are taught the basic education such as Mathematics, English and Values Education. They are also taught basic entrepreneurial, masonry and carpentry. Electrical and plumbing are also integrated in the curriculum. Basically, these students are being trained not only to build but help restore the Intramuros and other built heritage. “Built heritage” according to ETIntramuros are structures built 50 years ago or earlier.

This brilliant concept will be a great tool in educating students enrolled in regular schools as well as in promoting our culture and heritage that may eventually uplift our tourism. Escuela Taller is a movement that is worth supporting.

You may want to know more of Escuela Taller’s activities and may even want to be part of it. You can reach the Escuela Taller Team (http://etintramuros.wordpress.com/).

There are instances that we want to repaint a room or a section of our house that we currently dwell in or probably our offices or our place of business. Ordinary paints are very odorous; it would take days for the odors to go away. This will bring inconveniences and health risks to us. Moving out temporarily is an option but can be avoided if we could use an odorless paint. I found a few in the market but it is usually twice the price of ordinary paints. Made research and I found Flügger Paints, it is environment friendly paint, Lead free and has low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC). It is also very cost effective because it only requires 2 coats and it is durable (8 to 12 years). It is a very nice product and very true to its claims.

You may read all about its products on their website www.flugger.ph or email them at info@propaints.ph. They are exclusively distributed by Propaint Distribution Philippines.

I read one of the 2009 editions of the Blueprint magazine that featured the ecoKubo. The design concept was very impressive that it led me to research more about it. I found articles about the ecoKubo in pinoygreenacademy showing its design factors. Here is the link to the post: EcoKubo : Green House for the Tropics I ; EcoKubo : Green House for the Tropics II

Architect Nestor Arabejo, international liaison of the Philippine Green Building Council and principal of Ecotektonika presented the concept of ecoKubo, a design that won the second prize of the Pinakamagandang Bahay sa Balat ng Lupa 2008 with 35 entries in the student category and 44 entries in the professional category. “Green buildings are environment friendly because they increase efficiency of resource use like energy, water and other materials through better designs,” the architect said in an interview.

I hope we can get inspiration from the ecoKubo concept and its initiatives to bring awareness of the green architecture and sustainable designs.
